About: Our project is a redesign for the RMIT building 36. Building 36 is located in the center of Melbournes CBD on the education spine of Swanston street, the current building 36 has the perfect opportunity to explore exciting new architectural opportunities which are currently being missed. Our re-design aims to keep as much of the existing structure and services, but totally re-invigorate the student learning environment and create a truly iconic structure along Swanston street.
We looked at the movement of penguins in the Antarctic for creating both the facade and the internal layout by mapping the unique way they move in large groups. We also used wind analysis of the site to influence where and to what extent the penguins moved. We looked at how one movement carries throughout the entire group of penguins which in turn creates a unique ‘wave’ effect which we used in our design.
